In one of the German units on the Western Front, the soldiers learn about the revolution that has taken place in Berlin. Soldiers’ Councils begin to form, but for the main characters of the novel—ordinary soldiers Ernst Birkholtz, Jupe, Ferdinand Kozol, Adolf Betka, Valentin Lager, Vedling, Tjaden, Willi, and even Lieutenant Ludwig Breyer—politics is something alien. They simply wish to return home to their loved ones. Yet, at the same time, it is hard for them to leave the trenches where they have spent the most terrifying years of their lives.
